Albertsons is now officially known as the New Albertsons and is wholly owned by Eden Prairie, Minnesota-based Supervalu which is a supermarket retailer that operates 529 grocery stores. The stores are located in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, California, and certain parts of Utah. Albertsons was founded by Joe Albertson in 1939 in Boise, Idaho. The Idaho Statesman newspaper commended Joe Albertson for having the first store as “Idaho’s largest and finest food store”. Joe Albertson gave the customers many perks that were not seen by consumers at that time.
Albertsons offered the customers free parking, a money-back guarantee, and an ice cream shop. The first store was located at 17th and State Streets, a few blocks north of Boise. This first store proved to be an enormous success which led to Mr. Albertson opening up more stores in neighboring towns to the west, Nampa, Caldwell, and Emmett just before the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
After the war the business kept growing as Mr. Albertson would drive around neighborhoods checking for areas where children’s clothing hung out on the clothes lines. The reason is because he realized that this was the type of neighborhood where his type of Supermarket would go over well. Albertson became a public company in 1959 and by 1966 he had already opened his 100th store. Finally, January 23, 2006 Albertsons sold their stores to the Supervalu, CVS/Pharmacy for $17.4 billion in cash, stock and debt assumption. Now they are known as the New Albertsons.
