History of Dollar Tree
Dollar Tree is an American chain of discount stores that started in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. The company founder K.R. Perry opened a Ben Franklin store. He/She eventually turned those stores into K&K 5&10, a five and dime. Eventually he opened up additional K&K stores that focused mostly on toys. In 1986 the first Dollar Tree store opened up with Daniel Diaz In Dalton, Georgia.
The company decided to focus on $$ items and sold out their toy line to the KB Toys. The store merged with other Dollar Stores increasing their ability to focus on dollar items for their customers.

Job Description/ Average Wage
Cashier: The cashier is in charge of taking care of the customer’s purchases. They need to be able to make correct change and pack the merchandise so that it does not break. Many items are glass or ceramic and will break if not carefully wrapped. When the store is slow the cashier maybe required to stock some of the shelves. The average wage is $7.43 an hour.
Sales Associate: The person who works as a sales associate is on the floor in the different aisle helping customers find products, stocking shelves, and providing information about products. The sales associate must be friendly to the customers and knowledgeable about the products. The average wage is $7.35 an hour.
Stock: Some stores will require you to stay overnight to stock throughout the midnight shift. You will bring product from the back and bring it to the main floor of the store. You will ensure that everything is going in the right spot on the floor. You will also ensure that the back room is organized, and everything is placed where it should be. The average wage is $7 to $10 a hour.
Assistant Manager: Assisting the manager, you’re going to be in charge of helping with opening and closing the store. You will help with many various tasks that the employees need help with, as well as assisting customers with any problems that they may have. If any problems persist, you will report to either the store manager or the district manager themselves. The average wage is anywhere from $10 to $15 a hour.
Store Manager: The person who is the store manager is responsible for aspects of operations to do with their store. These things include but are exclusive to:
- Hiring and firing of employees
- Payroll/scheduling
- Merchandising
- Ordering in new merchandise
- Filling orders for already existing merchandise
- Returning defective merchandise
- Returning merchandise that does not sell and replacing it with merchandise that will sell.
