Family Dollar Stores began in 1959 by a twenty-one year old named Leon Levine. The first store was opened in November of that year in Charlotte, North Carolina. They kept growing opening stores all through the south so today they have approximately 6,617 stores in 44 states. Family Dollar Stores went public in 1970 for the first time with the first share costing $14.50.
In 1971 the 100th Family Dollar Store was open and by 1974 they had opened up their 200th Family Dollar Store. Just less than ten years later in 1981 Family Dollar Stores had already opened up their 400th store. Their expansion jumped in leaps and bounds. Leon Levine retired in 2003 leaving the position of head CEO to his son Howard R. Levine keeping this multi-billion dollar company in the family.

Job description/Average wage
Cashier: The cashier is responsible to take the sales from the customers and charging them the correct amount of money. They must either process the sales with cash or a debit card. They bag the merchandise for the customer. They must be friendly and courteous at all times with their customers. They are expected to keep their area clean and well stocked. The average wage for a cashier is $7.17 an hour.
Backroom / Stock: Working in the backroom is going to require you to unload trucks with items, stock them in the appropriate areas, as well as bring them to the front. You will also be in charge of helping with moving them to the front of the store. When they arrive off the truck, you may be required to price them according to local state laws. The average wage is anywhere from $7 to $11 a hour.
Team Member: Working the floor of the store, you’re going to be in charge of ensuring that the floor is clean, customers are being helped, as well as making sure that the shelves are stocked at 100%. You’re also going to make sure that all questions and concerns are directed toward the main manager. The average pay for this position itself is anywhere from $8 to $12 a hour.

Store Manager: The store manager is responsible for the total operations of the store. They may share some of the responsibilities with the assistant store manager but over all they are responsible for the complete operations of their store. They earn an approximate average wage of $42,000 a year.
