Deputy Director, Equine Protection Department: The main responsibility for this position is to assist the department director in the hiring, development and monitoring of staff, receipt and prioritization of requests for assistance, assignment of tasks to staff members, and tracking of progress on equine program and campaign goals. Other duties include, but are not limited to: assisting in the development and monitoring of the budget; representing The HSUS Equine Protection Department in media interviews and at meetings with local, state and federal officials, horse industry events, etc.; assisting with the selection, prioritization, and development of programs and campaigns in support of the organization’s equine protection goals.
Public Relations Specialist: The main responsibility of this position is to write press releases, pitch stories, develop new media contacts, update media database, place advertisements and public service announcements. Other duties include, but are not limited to: distribute collateral materials for review and incorporate feedback; develop targeted media lists with strong knowledge of media outlets and opportunities to position animal protection issues; field media inquiries and route to appropriate spokesperson to best position The HSUS in the news; distribute press releases utilizing best available resources; respond to inquiries from news media; supply reporters with background information, video, and schedule interviews with HSUS spokespeople. The salary range for this position is from the high $30s to low $40s.
Rescue Group Coordinator: The general responsibilities of the new Rescue Group Coordinator will include creating new tools and programs to assist rescue groups in their work, improve relationships and collaboration between rescue organizations and traditional brick-and-mortar shelters, and assess existing HSUS programs to enhance rescue group participation and support to ultimately increase pet adoption and rescue. Salary range for this position is in the low $40’s, based on qualifications and experience.
Legal Clerkships, Animal Protection Litigation: Law clerks will work closely with attorneys and be integrally involved in the process of researching, preparing and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal courts. Law clerks must have excellent legal writing and research skills. Although experience in animal protection and/or environmental law is preferred, we are primarily interested in working with students who are resourceful, innovative and productive, and who have a strong interest in animal protection litigation.
Veterinarian: The main responsibilities of this position are to provide daily veterinary care, as needed, to rescued animals. Other duties include, but are not limited to: designing and implementing a preventative veterinary care program; conducting routine examinations of individual animals to identify existing and potential medical issues; conducting routine hematological analyses and fecal exams to assess the health of individual animals, identifying potential medical problems, and to assess the efficacy of worming program; teaching sanctuary staff basic veterinary care procedures and techniques; designing, supervising, renovating and equipping veterinary care facility; observing ranch animals daily for signs of disease or injury; performing routine surgeries as needed; assisting in improving animal facilities; interfacing with local and university veterinarians to ensure that ranch animals are receiving the best possible care.
