Founded back in 1958, Toru Kumon created a learning center today that helps kids read, as well as learn other subjects such as Math.   In 2009, Kumon had over 4 million students studying the “Kumon” method.   There are over 25,000 locations across 46 countries.   Their North American headquarters are found in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Job Description / Average Wage

Tutor: You will assist the children with any subjects they need help with.   You will follow company policy, and help students with everything from math, to science.   You will receive tasks from the main manager on what to do on a daily basis.   Your average pay will be anywhere from $7 to $9 a hour.

Teaching Assistant: You will assist the main teacher in the learning center.   You will help with tutoring, organizing kids, as well as helping them with whatever problems that they may encounter.   The average assistant gets paid $8 to $10 a hour.

Receptionist: When you work as a receptionist, you’re going to help with answering the phone, setting up appointments, as well as helping parents with any questions or concerns that they may have.   When the children are ready to be tutored on a day, you will assist the teachers in the classrooms with any issues that they have, or any projects that they need help with.   The receptionist usually answers to the main general manager.   The average wage is anywhere from $7 to $9 a hour.

Shift Supervisor: When the general manager isn’t around, you’re going to help run the show.   You’re going to help teach, open up the shop, as well as ensure that all the tutors are doing their job the right way.   You will also help with various managerial duties.   The average wage is anywhere from $9 to $15 a hour.

General Manager: You’re going to help run the whole tutoring center.   As a general manager, you’re going to assist kids come into the tutoring center.   You’re going to set up the classroom, keep it clean, as well as assist the parents with any questions that they may have.   You will also help with opening and closing down the tutoring center when the time is needed.   The average wage starts anywhere from $30,000+ a year.

Interview Tips

Nothing beats being prepared before you will come for an interview which will take place few days after the needed documents for application are submitted. Wear a clothing that will show a teacher’s personality and be on time when you come up for an interview. It is also very necessary that you will have to compose yourself very well and portray a positive outlook when you will face the interviewers. The questions in the interview will be about your work history, your attitude towards children and your learning philosophies. Make sure to maintain an eye to eye contact with the interviewer and manifest sincerity in all your answers.
