Hendrik Meijer a Dutch immigrant founded Meijer’s in Greenville, Michigan in 1934. He/She was a local barber but decided to go into the grocery business in his community. One of his first employee’s was Frederik Meijer his 14-year-old son. At that time Frederik Meijer was a grocery bagger but later became the chairman of the company. The current co-chairmen, brothers Hank and Doug Meijer, are Hendrik’s grandsons.
After studying the trends in the grocery industry, Meijer was among the first to offer self-service shopping and shopping carts. In 1962 the modern format of Meijer was started with the opening of what is now known as “Meijer Thrifty Acres” in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Thrifty Acres stores are under the direction of Frederik Meijer who made them a tremendous success. In 1986 the stores were renamed Meijer and remain with that name until today with the family still in charge of operations.

Job description/ Average wage
Cashier: Cashiers are expected to check-out customers, take their cash or credit for the amount of the purchases. They must bag the grocery items for the customer and place in their carts. Also the cashiers are responsible for making sure that their cash drawers are kept in balance. They must greet the customers with a friendly smile and be courteous at all times. The average starting wage is $7.00 an hour.
Team Leader: Leading your department, you’re going to be in charge of making sure that your department is running at 100%. You’re going to make sure that the area is clean, as well as assign tasks to employees that need work. You will also assist all the employees in your department with what needs to be done. The average wage is anywhere from $8 to $15 a hour.
Stocker: The person who works the stocking position is responsible for putting the merchandise on the floor making sure that the shelves are kept full at all times. They must pull any outdated merchandise taking it off of the shelf. They are also expected to get rid of any items that have gone bad especially in the produce section of the store. The stocker must make sure that they are putting the right prices on merchandise and change the prices for sales. They also must make sure that when the sale is over the prices are remarked with the correct prices. The stocker starts out with the average wage of $7.00 an hour.
Customer Service: Working the customer service counter, you’re going to be in charge with helping with returns, as well as other various tasks such as lottery tickets, running product back to the particular departments, money orders and more. You will also assist cashiers from time to time when the customer service desk is slow. The average wage is anywhere from $7 to $13 a hour.
Loss Prevention: People who work in loss prevention are employed throughout the store. Many of them work at the door watching that customers are not leaving with unpaid for merchandise. They sometimes need to detain people that are caught stealing until the local police come and arrest them. They may be called to appear in court when needed. They also may work in the camera section viewing customers as they shop making sure that they are not stealing from the store. The average starting wage is $11.00 an hour depending on experience and training in the field.
