History of Orchard Supply Hardware

It was in 1931 when Orchard Supply was born. The rented warehouse was stocked with picking pails, orchard ladders, sprays, fertilizers and other farming supplies. This humble beginning has led the way for Orchard Supply to move to a larger location on 44 Vine Street. The new store location brought in hardware, gardening supplies, housewares and homewares. As the business flourished, it has transferred to 720 West San Carlos Street. In 1962, Albert B. Smith became president of Orchard Supply Hardware. Under his direction Orchard Supply Hardware grew with branch stores being established throughout the county. Orchard Supply Hardware well up to 1992, when a new distribution center was opened in the central California community of Tracy.

Orchard Supply Hardware has this retail philosophy : “Take good care of our customers and they will take good care of you.”

Job Description/Wage Averages

Pick-up Associate: The Pick-up Associate is responsible for providing service to customers, i.e. acknowledge all customers and assist them by loading their purchases in a safe and secure manner. This position will maintain the stock, housekeeping, safety and security of the Pick-up station. The hourly salary is $8 to $11.

Sales Associate: The primary focus of OSH Sales Associates is to enhance the customer shopping experience by providing fast, friendly service to customers by satisfying their needs and providing proactive sales assistance and support. Sales associates have a strong background in department and product knowledge, present information on product features, and provide frontline contact with the customer to ensure that the customer’s shopping experience is positive. He/she is responsible for accomplishing the business goals for sales and profit; recognize and acknowledge the Customer at all times, provide service to all customers, control inventory of department merchandise, maintain housekeeping, safety and security within the department. The hourly rate is $9 to $14.

Cashier: As a cashier at Orchard Supply Hardware, you’re often the first associate our customers meet, and the last associates our customers see in our stores. That makes it important that you greet and acknowledge all customers in a friendly, professional manner. Orchard cashiers are expected to accurately and efficiently tender sales transactions, and help maintain a clean, safe, friendly environment for customers and associates alike. The hourly rate is within $8 to $9.

Executive Assistant: The Executive Assistant-Finance and Legal is responsible for managing the administrative functions for the Executive Vice President/CFO and Senior Vice President of Legal. This includes preparing and proofing presentations, acting as a liaison to senior management and coordinating special projects to ensure the department runs efficiently and all critical deadlines are met.
