The beginnings of Sendik’s can be traced when the Balistreri Family of Santa Elia, Sicily immigrated to the United States and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The family began peddling quality fruits and vegetables by horse drawn wagon on the northeast side of the city and eventually opened fresh produce markets on Oakland and Downer Avenues. In 1949, Sendik’s fruit and vegetable market on Silver Spring Drive in the heart of Whitefish Bay. It was the 3rd Sendik’s store. The store became known for honesty and integrity in treating customers and suppliers with courtesy and respect.
From humble beginnings, the Balistreri family continues to build on the foundation laid down by the founders so long ago – providing quality products and exceptional customer service remains the hallmark of Sendik’s Food Markets.
Job Descriptions/Wage Averages
Cashier: This person receives payment of the customers in cash or through credit cards. He/she must maintain quality customer service. The hourly rate is $8 to $9.
Floral Manager: This position will provide consistent customer service; determine work priorities and establish weekly work responsibilities in order to consistently meet department goals; maintain inventory controls through effective ordering; create and execute innovative floral and gift displays; assist with processing, arranging, watering, displaying, and stocking of flowers, plants, and gifts; follow and enforce safety guidelines, as well as maintaining a neat and well organized sales floor, coolers, and backroom storage area; maintain and build rapport with store vendors.
Grocery Manager: This position must provide consistent customer service; determine work priorities and establish weekly work responsibilities in order to consistently maintain adequate staffing levels and department conditions; order and control inventory of products to maintain proper in-stock for all shelf and promotion items; maintain quality merchandise with good selling dates for customers; assist with receiving, stocking, and displaying of grocery products; create and execute product displays and end caps; follow and enforce sanitation and safety guidelines, as well maintaining a neat and well organized sales floor and backroom; maintain and build rapport with store vendors ; build strong teams, which includes training, developing, and recognizing associates; assist in supervision of other departments when needed; achieve financial goals set forth in the budget.
Cheese Manager: This person will determine work priorities and establish weekly work responsibilities in order to consistently meet department goals; maintain inventory controls through effective ordering and production scheduling; assist with cutting, wrapping, stocking, and displaying of cheese products; create and execute innovative product displays and end caps; follow and enforce sanitation and safety guidelines; maintain and build rapport with store vendors; build strong teams, which includes training, developing manpower to do the job.
Director of Bakery Departments: The Director of Bakery Departments is responsible for ensuring consistency among all store bakery departments, along with managing and developing all bakery categories. In addition, this position is responsible for driving sales, merchandising, building strong relationships and alliances, and achieving financial goals within the bakery departments.
Product Demonstration Manager: This person will hire, train, and manage demo staff; contact vendors and schedule demo’s for all Sendik’s locations; evaluate success of demo sales; execute demos and decide the most effective way to demo each product; build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and demo associates; conduct on- going evaluation of Demo Program
