Toys R Us Job Application Online

History of Toys R US

Toys R US started out as Children’s Supermart by Charles Lazarus in Washington, DC during the post-war baby boom era in 1948. At first it was a furniture retail outlet for baby furniture. Mr. Lazarus soon started getting requests for baby toys and later more mature toys for children. In 1957 the focus of the store changed to toys for children of all ages. Toys R US came in existence in 1957 in Rockville, Maryland as a toy store like it is today. In 1966 Interstate Toys acquired Toys R US, White Front and Topps Department Stores as well as Children’s Bargain Town USA.

The stores soon grew until they were bought out and had an appointed board of directors who launched a plan to re-launch the chain with remodeling. This did not prove to be too successful and the directors blamed the competition from Wal-Mart and Target for their failure. Bain Capital Partners, L.L.C. took over investing $1.3 billion dollars splitting the toy division from the baby division. Now there are two divisions Toys R US and Babies are US. Both divisions are very happy with the change and the business seems to be doing very well in the open market place.
